The European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs called for the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen as soon as possible.
MEPs opted for full accesssion with land, sea and air borders and noted that maintaining the current internal border controls had a negative economic impact.
It is stated that the gradual abolition of controls first at sea and air borders, and then on land, would have negative consequences.
The deferral of Bulgaria’s and Romania’s full accession has brought about negative consequences not only for the two countries, but also for the EU as a whole, the parliamentary committee adds. According to it, the enlargement of Schengen should not be linked to weaknesses in the areas of asylum and migration. A report with the Committee's call to the Council of the European Union will be subject to voting by the European Parliament in December.
