European supercomputer will start working in Bulgaria by the end of 2020

Bulgaria will be one of the eight countries where a European supercomputer will start working at global level.

An investment of € 1 billion will be allocated for the establishment of these super-fast calculation centres. Some 840 million of the amount will be provided from the EC and 12 million from Bulgaria.

These innovative centres will develop applications that will help many scientists in many areas - from creating new drugs to environmental changes.

Boyko Borisosv, Prime Minister of Bulgaria: As technology advances, I see how far the EU is from the leading countries in this sphere. So I am glad that the European Commission and Europe now think that in the coming months and years, this technological revolution will be enormous.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Digital Economy and Digital Society: A year since the EU said we wanted to regain leadership in this area. After very intensive work, Europe has 1 billion Euro of investment, and Europe has selected countries, including Bulgaria, to regain leadership, and in just a year and a half to be among the top 3 superpowers in the world.

Roberto Viola, Director General of DG CONNECT: Bulgaria will have the best schools for mathematicians and computer specialists. Mainly Bulgarians will work in those centres and people from the European Union.

The super-fast computer will start working in Bulgaria by the end of 2020 at Technopark in Sofia. It is among the 10 most powerful computers in Europe and the 50 most powerful computers in the world.
