Farmers protest in Northern Bulgaria

Farmers in different regions of the country came out in protest on September 14. Farmers' protests are planned in 11 other European countries. The reason for the discontent is the unregulated, according to them, import of Ukrainian grain and the green policies of Europе (The european green deal).

100 heavy tractors crossed the main boulevards of Dobrich. In northern Bulgaria, there are also protests in Vidin, Vratsa, Montana, Ruse, Pleven, Razgrad and Silistra. Local grain farmers also spoke out against gas extraction from fertile lands. According to them, the low-quality imported goods undermine Bulgarian agriculture.

Storage facilities are full, sales prices are low. They don't have the funds and fear they won't be able to plant in autumn.

"The National Association of Grain Producers is an occasion to write a declaration against bureaucratic, stupid decisions of the European Commission in the agricultural sector. 12 member states will support us, there will be protests in these countries, they start tomorrow. Imports coming in from Ukraine are not controlled. In Bulgaria there is no control of what enters our country. It is destroying Bulgarian agriculture," said Radostina Zhekova, chairwoman of the Dobrudja Union of Grain Producers.

"They killed the fruit growing, they killed the vegetable growing, now they want to kill the grain growing. We don't want that. I am a young man. I love farming, I love my job, I want to stay in Bulgaria and I think the state should take care of this", said agronomist Veronika Chalakova.

"We are against Ukrainian imports, which are uncontrolled, without any quality measures," said grain farmer Deyan Balchev.

The protesters stopped for a shortperiod of time in front of the office of the State Fund for Agriculture - Paying Agency, where they submitted their demands.
