Five people were injured in a chain-reaction crash on Trakia motorway near the town of Ihtiman on 9th of October. Three of the injured have been admitted to hospital, one of them with a head injury. Seven vehicles were involved in the accident which was caused by low visibility. Smoke and fog from a burning landfill in the region was the cause of the road accident, the director of "Fire Safety and Protection of the Population", Chief Commissioner Nikolai Nikolov told an emergency briefing.
Traffic is back to normal. Chief Commissioner Nikolov urged drivers to observe the speed restrictions.
The landfill is still burning and the visibility on the area in reduced. The fire results from biological decomposition.
The Mayor of Ihtiman said that yesterday he had activated a fire-fighting plan and that the landfill fire was suppressed. There are a lot of people who collect waste and they may have caused the fire, he added.
