After the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia adopted legislative changes, according to which Bulgarian clubs will have to rename themselves, Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry on November 3, 2022, came up with the position that these changes are aimed at discriminatory restriction of the right of association of Bulgarians there. They also pointed out that the reason was a one-sided interpretation of historical facts.
The Foreign Ministry pointed out that there are no similar measures regarding the period of totalitarianism and communism, that this hinders the implementation of the Treaty of Good Neighbourliness and that there are already decisions of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg against this type of action by the authorities in the Republic of North Macedonia.
