If EU falls apart, Europe will be continuously destabilized, Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev said on 23rd of June. He and his German counterpart Joachim Gauck participated in a discussion with students in Sofia University. According to Gauck, the Brexit debate gave an impetus for reforms.

The national governments should not shift the blame for failures to Brussels, Plvneliev said. He is firm that the European integration does not threaten the sovereignty of the individual countries. He is convinced that there is no contradiction between strong states and strong European Union. According to him, the mission of the alliance is to support the rule of law and human rights.

The German president is convinced that the EU cannot be destroyed because it brings many benefits for the people.

The best thing in the debate on Brexit was the debate itself as it revealed dissatisfaction with the EU, which previously often remained hidden. It prompted reflections about Europe, gave impetus for reform. We should draw lessons from the crisis and continue to discuss how we want to live together in Europe, President Gauck said.

The two presidents opened a joint business forum. Plevneliev presented the advantages to invest in Bulgaria. Gauck quoted German entrepreneurs who said that Bulgaria was attractive for business, but complained of corruption.

Investors say that the Bulgarian economy is under the level of its abilities and moves, figuratively speaking, with the handbrake on, President Gauck said.

The German President spoke with the Chairperson of Bulgaria’s Parliament. Tsetska Tsacheva, who said that the MPs aimed at adopting legislative measures to restrict corruption and organized crime.

Germany’s President Joachim Gauck is on a three day visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev.
