It is snowing across the whole country. More snow is expected to fall in the Eastern Bulgaria.
On 29th January, code yellow weather warning was issued for winter storms and heavy snow fall for 8 districts in Bulgaria. The weather is potentially hazardous in the districts of Varna, Bourgas, Rousse, Dobrich, Silistra, Razgrad, Shumen and Targovishte. Due to overflowing of Veleka River in the southeast of Bulgaria the road between the villages of Tsarevo and Rezovo was closed. The mountain passes Varbitsa, Zlatitsa and Troyan are closed for traffic. Heavy-freight vehicles weighing over 12 tonnes are banned to travel on the route Rousse - Byalla in the northern part of the country. Big lorries have to use chains.
The severe winter conditions in Bulgaria caused electric power cuts in 27 villages in the far West of the country, in the region of Kystendil, due to a failure in a long-distance transmission line.
The situation on 29th January remains busy at Danube Bridge crossing point, at the border with Romania, where almost 200 heavy freight vehicles have been held up and waiting to leave Bulgaria. Over 900 lorries crossed the border check up point for the recent 24 hours and the queue is now shorter. The border authorities are working at full capacity and additional windows are opened to facilitate border crossing clearance formalities. More heavy freight vehicles however arrive from inside the country to Danube Bridge and are queueing up in the line.
The road conditions in the region of Shumen remain complicated because of heavy snowing and snowdrifts. The school buses got stuck in the piles of snow between three villages in the region of Shumen, but soon were pulled from the snow by machines of the district road management services. 9 schools in the area are on break. Buses from Shumen will not travel on the routes to Varna and Rousse.
Power outage affected Bezmer airport and some areas in the district of Yambol in the South-Eastern Bulgaria. Engineers working to restore the electricity say the failure was caused by heavy icing of power lines, strong wind and snow. The village of Zlatari remains without water. A team of specialists is working to restore the water supply.
The adverse winter conditions have affected the far Northeastern district of Silistra and the situation got complicated due to heavy snow and strong winds. Snowfall and blowing snow have reduced the visibility. Driving conditions are impacted by snow-narrowed roads between the cities of Silistra and Shumen.
School students in the whole area have been granted an unscheduled snow break.
