Health Minister: Wearing masks outdoors becomes compulsory as of October 22

Bulgaria’s Minister of Health Prof. Kostadin Angelov on October 20 visited Lovech district to get acquainted with the established organization in connection with the spread of COVID-19 in the district and the readiness of medical institutions to deal with the pandemic.

Prof. Angelov also participated in a meeting of the Regional Crisis Management Staff.

From October 22, wearing face masks outdoors will be mandatory for everyone, the health minister announced at the meeting.

"Our aim is to reduce the number of infected Bulgarian citizens and reduce the number of people that go into hospitals. Through the measure, we will also protect the Bulgarian medical professionals. We must keep the medics alive so that there is someone to treat us," Minister Angelov said.

The situation in Lovech district is under control, although for the past 2 weeks we have an increase in the number of those infected with coronavirus, Angelov added.

There are two main hospitals that are actively involved in the treatment of patients with COVID-19. These are the hospital in Lovech and the hospital in Troyan. There is a sufficient amount of vacant beds in both hospitals. The hospital in Lovech has 4 beds for conservative treatment and 9 for intensive care. The hospital in Troyan has 8 beds for conservative treatment of patients. These beds can be increased to meet the needs of absolutely everyone, said Minister Angelov.

The learning process at the schools on the territory of Lovech district will continue in person.

At present, the number of students is 12,871. Of these, 0.02% have tested positive for coronavirus. 0.3% are quarantined. The total number of teachers is 1,302 and 0.5% of them have tested positive for the virus. 0.8% are quarantined. Of the children in kindergartens, zero were diagnosed and 1% were quarantined.
