Winter conditions across North Eastern Bulgaria remain heavy on 27th January. It has been snowing with various intensity for three consecutive days. The snowfall has disrupted road traffic and caused difficulties to people. Some areas saw significant snowdrifts and icy roads.
Dalgopol municipally in the region of the North-Eastern coastal city of Varna, has issued a severe weather warning. Villages in the area of Provadia were affected by power cuts, several villages near Varna remained without water supply. On 27th of January the Port of Varna was closed and the morning flights at Varna airport were cancelled.
The city of Silistra in the far North-East of Bulgaria, on the bank of the Danube river and the border with Romania, has literally been blocked due to the heavy snow fall, which made many roads in the area impassable. Snow drifts at places are 2 metres high.
At midnight on 27th January Danube Bridge was re-opened for heavy-freight vehicles. The Border police and the Customs House in the city of Rousse made the necessary arrangement to clear the long queue of TIR lorries, held up at the border on the way to Romania.
