IKAR AWARDS 2014 TO BE PRESENTED

The prestigious annual awards for professional achievements in the area of theatre, circus and cabaret arts will be presented at a ceremony in the National Theatre ‘Ivan Vazov’ in the capital city of Sofia. The IKAR Awards ceremony is held every year on 27th March, which is the World Theater Day, initiated in 1961 by UNESCO’s International Theatre Institute (ITI).

The topic of this year’s ceremony will be “Who Wins”?. The awards of the Union of Bulgarian Actors (UBA) will be presented in 16 categories, among which will be the categories for circus art, puppet theatre performance, debut, set design, female and male performance in leading roles and for direction.

The actor Stefan Mavrodiev will be given the special IKAR-2014 award for outstanding contribution to theatre. The actor Mihail Hadzhiiliykov will receive a special recognition for honour and dignity.

The tradition of giving awards was launched by the Union of Bulgarian Artists in 1974 as a sign of commitment to the objectives of the International Theatre Institute - to promote mutual understanding and cooperation between theatre artists and to increase the public perception of the role of art as a whole.

Since 2002, the awards ceremony has been named IKAR (Icarus) after the Greek mythological character Icarus, a symbol of spiritual flight and quest.

The event will be broadcast live on the Bulgarian National Television at 21:00.
