KRISTALINA GEORGIEVA IS BULGARIA’S CANDIDATE FOR EU FOREIGN POLICY CHIEF

This was announced by the Bulgarian Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski from Brussels on 16th of July, before the beginning of the meeting of the EU leaders to choose the new foreign policy chief.

The Prime Minister said that he did not have a mandate, in principle, to present Bulgaria’s candidate for a Commissioner to the leaders, but only for the position which Catherine Ashton had occupied until then.

If Kristalina Georgieva is not chosen for the EU Foreign Policy chief, consultations will be held in Bulgaria for the nomination of the Bulgarian candidate for EU Commissioner.

In the recent weeks, Kristalina Georgieva and the Italian Foreign Minister, Federica Mogherini have been pointed by analysts as the most favoured candidates for the position of EU Foreign Policy Chief.

Some countries opposed the candidacy of the Italian Federica Mogherini because she was regarded as a pro-Russian in the Ukrainian crisis.
