Bulgarian lawyer Daniela Mihailova is the winner of the “Human of the Year” Award for 2015. The title was given to her for contribution to human rights.
"Human of the Year" is the annual Bulgarian Helsinki Committee award recognizing contributions to human rights in Bulgaria and is presented for eighth consecutive year. It took place on the International Human Rights Day, 10th of December.
The two second awards went to Viktor Lilov and the volunteers from the project “Refugees” and Jill and Sadie Klasbi.
The award of the audience was presented to Svilen Cheshmedzhiev for his activities for conservation of the biodiversity along the Danube river.
The idea of the organizers of the awards initiative is to communicate a message to the public as to which causes are significant and which examples are worth following.
A month ago there was a scandal over the controversial nomination of the Australian Jock Palfreeman, who was convicted of the murder of the Bulgarian student Andrei Monov and sentenced to 20 years in a Bulgaria prison.
Due to the public reaction, the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee decided to drop the individual nomination of Palfreeman, but left in place the nomination of the Bulgarian Association for Prisoners, which is headed by Palfreeman.
