In the run up of the European Parliament elections, Martin Shulz, the Party of European Socialists candidate for President of the European Commission gave a special interview for the Bulgarian National Television and discussed his views about Europe’s development in the next five years.

BNT: “Мr. Shultz what was your main message to the Bulgarians at the beginning of the campaign? “

Martin Shulz: “That they should vote. It is for the first time that the MEPs decide about the next President of the European Commission and therefore the vote of the citizens matters. They can directly influence the direction of the European Union and therefore my first message is: Vote!”

BNT: “If you are elected as President of the European Commission what would you do to overcome the impact of the economy crisis on the everyday lives of the citizens?”

Martin Shulz: “I think in Bulgaria one of the biggest problems is the very high interest rates for small and medium enterprises. Exactly those enterprises create most of the new jobs and therefore to guarantee that investments are not impossible because of the high interest rates, needs to help small and medium enterprises. Second thing is to fight against unemployment of young people. Young people are the future of our society and to bring them to jobs is not only a question of jobs. It is also a question of dignity.”

BNT: “The crisis in Ukraine brought again on the top of the agenda Europe’s energy dependency on Russia. What kind of solutions would seek if you are elected as the President of the Commission?”

Martin Shulz: “I think that we should work to get as much as possible independent on our energy supply from other countries, but we should be honest this is in a short term not possible. It is a long term project. And therefore I hope that we will find diplomatic solutions for the Ukrainian problems and we should not contribute to heat up the atmosphere every day. We have to make an appeal to both governments: the government in Kiev and the government in Moscow to look for diplomatic solutions.”

BNT: “What is your dream Europe and what would you do to make this dream come true?”

Martin Shulz: “My dream Europe is where young people are not paying with their life chances for a crisis they have not caused. And my dream of Europe is that the institutions in Brussels care about the daily life of ordinary citizens. We are only discussing in billions; a billion here, a billion there, ten billions the next day. For most of the citizens, I think for you and me, a million is an enormous amount of money, but for ninety six percent of our citizens a thousand euros is an enormous money and to care about the individual interest of citizens who have to live with thousand euros. That’s what my dream is. That  we care  in  Brussels about their lives.“

BNT: “Thank you very much Mr. Shulz.”
