meglena kuneva elected new education minister

On 3rd of February, Bulgaria’s Parliament approved Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva as the new minister for education. She was elected to the post after a vote in which 106 MPs voted in favour, 66 voted against and 31 MPs abstained.

The Chairperson of Bulgaria’s Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva congratulated Kuneva on being elected as minister for education and said it was not required Kuneva to take an oath as minister because she already had taken an oath of office in her capacity of Deputy Prime Minister, when the current government was formed.

After the first voting, the independent MP Georgi Kadiev requested the vote to be repeated to allow some MPs from “Movement for Rights and Freedoms” (MRF) and the nationalist “Ataka” party a second opportunity to vote.

All 80 MPs from the main coalition partner, the centre-right GERB, 13 from the junior coalition partner, the centre- right Reformist Bloc, 8 from Bulgarian Democratic Centre (BDC) and 3 independent MPs voted in favour.

Thirty five MPs from the opposition Bulgarian socialist Party (BSP), 21 from MRF, one from the Reformist Bloc, 2 from the “Patriotic Front” (one of the parties supporting the coalition government), 5 from “Ataka” and 2 independent MPs voted against.

Six MPs from the Refomist bloc, 13 from the “Patriotic Front”, 3 from BDC and 9 from “Alternative for Bulgarian Revival” (ABC - another party supporting the coalition government) abstained.

Kuneva was nominated to the post last week by the Reformist Bloc after the former minister for education, prof. Todor Tanev resigned on 1st of February.

She is the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Policies Coordination and Institutional Affairs, the leader of “Bulgaria of the Citizens” movement (one of the parties in the junior partner in the ruling coalition, the Reformist Bloc - RB) and co-chairperson of the RB.
