The history of ancient Sofia can now be accessed from smart phones thanks to a special mobile application developed by a team of Bulgarian students. The application can be downloaded free from the website ‘Invisible Serdika’. It offers an opportunity for users to learn more about the most notable historical and archeological sites of Sofia, which was called Serdika in Thracian and Roman times.
There is information available about key archeological sites: St. Sofia Church (built in the 6th century on the place of an ancient Roman theatre and several earlier churches), Rotunda St. George (dating back to the end of 3rd and the beginning of 4th century), Roman Amphitheatre of Serdika (built in the 3rd – 4th century AD on top of a 2nd – 3rd century theatre which had been ravaged by the Goths) and the Largo excavations (the main street of the ancient Serdika dating back to the 4th century).
Users will be able to view computerized visualization of the historical landmarks, to picture how they looked in their authentic form and to obtain full information about them, though links to the national catalogue of academic libraries. The historical details were gathered from old archives.
The application was developed for nearly 5 months by a small team of 10 students from the Student Computer Art Society. Soon more archeological treasures of Sofia will be made visible through it.
