Bulgarian Government will form a National Staff Unit to monitor the situation in Ukraine. The purpose of the unit is to alert the Government in the event of threats to Bulgaria’s security and to prepare scenarios with measures to mitigate risks.
The unit will develop plans for alternative supply of gas and petroleum products for Bulgaria, if tension in Ukraine escalates. There will also be a strategy for dealing with possible refugee influx. The unit will monitor for changes in the radiation levels in Ukraine, where there are 15 operational power units at 4 nuclear power plants.
At the meeting of the Security Council with the Council of Ministers on 4th March, it was decided to strengthen border controls, because of a possibility that some criminal groups might become active and take advantage of the crisis in Ukraine.
