NO EXPLOSIVE FOUND IN THE VAN AT TERMINAL 1 OF SOFIA AIRPORT

Several tense hours at Sofia airport on 1st of December because of suspicions of a bomb in a van with Belgium registration. Specialists services were mobilized. Fortunately no explosive device was found.

The bus was left in the parking area of Terminal 1 of the airport at 1.00 a.m. on 1st of Decemberr. During a police patrol with a dog, the dog reacted to the van and an examination followed. There were two controlled explosions.

Terminal 1 will remain closed for passengers until mid-night on 1st of December.

Although initially it was reported that explosives were present, a senior airport official later confirmed that no explosives were found.

Commissioner Antonio Angelov, the Head of Chief Directorate “Border Police” explained that the van was left in the parking area about 1.00 a.m. on 1st of December by a non-Bulgarian citizen, who departed on a flight around 5.00 a.m. During a regular patrol by the border police officers on duty with a police dog, the dog reacted positively to the parked van. After that the police used a special device for detection of explosives, which also gave a positive signal. All the specialist services were notified and an examination followed. No explosives were found, Angelov said and added that the luggage in the van and the van itself were being examined.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov, commented for “24 Hours” newspaper that the actions of the airport officials and the police in relation to the suspected explosive device led to unnecessary panic. He described their actions as being not a mistake, but as irresponsible and said that they should be held to account.

Terminal 1 was closed for passenger traffic for security reasons. All passengers were re-directed to Terminal 2.

All flight arrivals and departures were diverted to Terminal 2 until mid-night.
