The Pass of the Republic (also known as Hainboaz Pass) will re-open this afternoon, November 11.
The 22-kilometre section from the town of Kilifarevo to Predela was closed to traffic to all motor vehicles in October due to repairs. It has been re-surfaced with new asphalt pavement. 300 cubic metres of slopes were demolished by the alpine method and a 50,000 square metre safety net was placed to stop possible landslides. Drainage has also been improved.
The maintenance works will enhance traffic safety during the upcoming winter season, as the Hainboaz Pass is the main road connecting the intensive traffic of heavy duty vehicles between Northern and Southern Bulgaria.
The repairs were scheduled to be completed at the end of October but were extended due to bad weather. The cost is 2 million BGN.
