Members of the public gathered in Sofia’s Dondukov boulevard on 15th of December for a protest against energy and water regulator’s plans to increase the prices of the water. The protest was organized by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and turned into a demand for the Prime Minister's resignation.
Protesters want Boyko Borissov's resignation because of the plans to increase water price in 2018. Discontent members of the public were throwing eggs at the building of the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC).
BSP representatives demanded the resignation not only because of the water price hike but also because of the whole policy of the government.
It is expected in the early afternoon on 15th of December, EWRC will come up with a draft on the water price rise. The regulator decides in a closed session about the increase.
Price increase is planned in 14 Bulgharian cities by 3% up to 20%. The biggest increase is foreseen for Yambol, Vratsa, Sofia and Bourgas. EWRC explains the increase with the investment costs set out in the business plans of the water and sewerage companies.
