The panel of experts recommended the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv to be the European Capital of Culture in 2019. This was announced at a ceremony which took place in the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture on 5th of September and was broadcast live on the Bulgarian National Television.
Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Veliko Turnovo were the other short-listed cities.
The panel which assessed the final applications consists of 13 Bulgarian and international experts.
Plovdiv is expected to be formally designated as European Capital of Culture by the EU Ministers of Culture at their meeting in May 2015.
