The army is ready to send up to 3000 troops with transport equipment along the border with Greece to prevent influx of migrants, Minister of Defence Krassimir Karakachanov said on 8th of April after the extraordinary meeting with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, which the PM convened to discuss the situation at the borders, after days in which migrants in Greece had sought to reach the border with North Macedonia.
The meeting was attended by the interior minister, the defence minister and the heads of services, after 1,000 migrants from a Thessaloniki camp headed to North Macedonia, but were stopped by the Greek authorities. The prime minister urged the army and the police to be ready to react as required.
The general conclusion after the meeting is that there is no increased migratory pressure on Bulgaria, and no emergency situation on the Bulgarian-Greek border. The Bulgarian-Greek and Bulgarian-Turkish borders are perfectly guarded and at the moment attempts for illegal entry are at minimum levels. What Prime Minister Borissov has insisted before the army and the MoI authorities is to strengthen the border police patrols.
