On 4th of December, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov took his British counterpart David Cameron on a tour to Lesovo border crossing point at Bulgaria’s border with Turkey and Elhovo control centre. PM Cameron was shown a section of a new razor-wire security fence.
Later during a visit in the Regional Directorate of the border police in the nearby Elhovo, the delegation was shown the created organization for border control, the system for video monitoring and all the measures undertaken to deter illegal crossings.
Security at the Bulgarian-Turkish border has been reinforced with additional number of officers and specialised patrols.
Cameron praised Bulgaria on the border control and noted he was greatly impressed with the effectiveness of the border security.
”It is important that Europe has strong external borders and here in Bulgaria you can see a prime minister and a government that is absolutely committed to that,” PM Cameron said.
He added that European countries which faced increased flows of migration should learn from Bulgaria how to improve their controls and commented that Bulgaria could serve as an example for compliance with the Schengen criteria.
