Despite that on 4th of November the Bulgarian government proposed to mitigate the cutbacks in the social payments of the police officers, the police protests continued. Currently, there are demonstrations in the capital city of Sofia and the Black Sea coastal city of Varna.

The police officers said they would not accept compromises and insist the government to entirely withdraw the proposed financial cutbacks. On 4th of November, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, speaking after a meeting with the Finance Minister and the Minster of Interior, proposed some concessions from the originally proposed financial cutbacks and said that the reduced payments would apply only to newly appointed officers.

Around lunch time on 4th of November, protesting employees of Bulgaria’s Ministry of interior shut down the traffic for an hour at the Eagles Bridge in the capital city of Sofia. The protesters offered flowers to the drivers as a gesture of apology for the inconvenience.

The officers blocked the traffic and marched along Tsar Osvoboditel street and moved on to the building of Parliament, where the peaceful protest met the MPs with booing. The protesters laid flowers in front of the building, lit candles and threw coins.

Police protests shut down traffic for a short time on some roads in the country.

1,000 protesters took the streets in the city of Smolyan. Border police officers blocked, for a short time, one of the lanes of a boulevard in the centre of the city. Police officers from the towns of Rudozem and Madan shut down the traffic for half an hour on the road between Smolyan and Madan.

Police officers and fire-fighters went out on a protest during the lunch break. They demanded the existing system of payments to remain in place because of the risks of the profession and the restriction, which did not allow them to work additionally after the end of their working hours.

Employees from the prison in Bourgas and their colleagues from curt and judicial security units blocked the traffic on one of the busiest roads in the city.

The protests in the city of Sliven took place in front of the building of the district directorate of the Ministry of interior.

An unusual form of protest took place in the city of Silistra, where more than 100 MoI officers continuously crossed one and the same pedestrian many times for about an hour. For a short time there were disruptions in the traffic and frustrated drivers, but most of the drivers said they were in solidarity with the demands of the police officers.

Kulata and Ilinden checkpoints at the Bulgarian-Greek border were blocked for a short time.
