In his address during the first sitting of the 47th National Assembly on December 3, President Rumen Radev pointed out that expectations from the new parliament are high .

The head of state called on the new MPs to think very carefully about the mission assigned to them by the Bulgarian members of the public before the voting in the plenary hall begins.

Rumen Radev said it was time for a consensus on national priorities, justice and the rule of law.

First of all, according to the head of state, a political consensus is needed on the need for sustainable, reformist and social governance. The life of the parliament and the fate of our political system depend on it, which , Radev stressed, cannot endure another election in the winter. The fate of people who expect legal solutions to the main problems in times of crisis also depends on the political consensus.

According to the President, the MPs from the 47th National Assembly are called to bring new life to the parliamentary question time, which according to Radev was practically abolished in previous years and to give new life to freedom of speech and the electoral process.

"We can no longer allow historical time to be wasted, nor can we be subject to populism," Radev added.

The other important national consensus is that of justice and lawfulness, the president said in an address to the new lawmakers. If we want this parliament to be lasting and useful, it must return public life to the rule of law, said Rumen Radev.

Therefore, according to him, the priority task is to dismantle the "prosecutor's umbrella" over corruption and abusues .

"This “umbrella” ensures impunity for the high level corruption and the criminals who torment the Bulgarians forgotten by the state. I hope all MPs from both the left and the right are convinced that this is the key to the future. If the parliament fails to achieve decisive changes in the prosecutor's office in the foreseeable future, very soon the past will seek revenge under the same umbrella, "Radev said.

The head of state also called for a consensus on socio-economic policy, because people expect legal action to help them get through the crisis in the winter months.

Among the priorities, according to Rumen Radev, are the fight against the pandemic, the adoption of the 2022 Budget, the consensus on the country's foreign policy.

"All of the above will remain only good wishes if we do not mobilise our efforts to achieve the most important national goal - the strengthening of statehood," Radev said.

According to him, actions are needed to dismantle the governing model rejected by the electorate, remove the backstage politics, tackle corruption, and strengthen control over public spending.

"Closing this era of transition depends on you. We cannot afford to waste more time and national resources. I believe that this parliament, which is the youngest so far, has the capacity and energy to restore optimism to Bulgarians and bring the country on the path to freedom, development and modernisation. I sincerely wish you every success in your highly responsible mission! " the head of state stressed.
