Bulgaria supports the European Future of Ukraine, the Head of State President Rosen Plevneliev said at the talks he held with the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, who is on a one-day official visit to Bulgaria on 30th of June. The visit is the first a Ukrainian president has made for the past 15 years.

Poroshenko is convinced that Brexit does not threaten the European perspective of his country. "Ukraine has made some important steps towards European integration and Brexit will not stop us," he said. According to Poroshenko, after the Brexit vote, EU would become stronger and said he expected the attitudes of Euroscepticism to be overcome.

He thanked for the Bulgarian support for the introduction of visa-free travel for Ukrainian citizens in the EU.

“Bulgaria does not recognize the results from the referendums, organized by the self-proclaimed authorities in Donetsk and Luhansk. The need to fully fulfill the commitments assumed by all sides in the conflict under the Minsk agreements remains without an alternative. Plevneliev highlighted.

"We have never recognized and will never recognize the illegal occupation and annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. I have said more than once: for us Crimea is Ukraine and Ukraine is Europe,”he said.

Poroshenko said he highly appreciated the principle and firm position of Bulgaria in support to Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

"The balance in the Black Sea region is disturbed and it depends on all of us to look for guarantees for our security," Plevneliev said. He explained that the instability in the region was due not only to the crisis in Ukraine but to the frozen conflicts in Transnistria and the South Caucasus.

"Ukraine is interested in cooperation with Bulgaria and Romania in the area of security," Poroshenko said.

In the presence of the two presidents, an Intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in case of disasters was signed, as well as a Memorandum between the Bulgarian and Ukrainian Ministries of Youth and Sport on cooperation in the sphere of youth and an Agreement between the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the State Space Agency of Ukraine on cooperation in the framework of the space experiment Ionasat-Micro at the spacecraft Microsat-M.

Later, in a meeting with Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, President Poroshenko discussed possibilities for improvement of the economic relations between Bulgaria and Ukraine.

Presidents Plevnleiv and Poroshenko took part in a ceremony dedicated to the opening of a monument to the Ukrainian poet and writer Taras Shevchenko.
