Hundreds of believers arrived in Bulgaria’s Rila Monastery early in the morning on August 1 to join to join the procession with the wonderworking icon of the Holy Virgin Mary.
The icon is stored in the main temple "Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary" of the monastery. The relic is taken out twice a year from its permanent place - on the fifth day of the Holy Week and on 1 August, at the beginning of the Virgin's fasting.
The icon of the Holy Virgin is the oldest shrine of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and dates from the 12th century. Around the central image of the Mother of God there are holy relics of 32 Christian saints whose names are inscribed on metal plates.
It is believed that in the 19th century the miraculous icon saved dozens of settlements in Bulgaria from epidemics. That is why thousands of believers from all over the world come to the Rila Monastery today to pray for health and well-being.
