For one hour on 31st of January, protesting Greek farmers blocked the motorway leading from the border checkpoint Kulata to Ceres. The police in Greece very quickly managed to deal with the situation and the road was opened for traffic before long queues were formed on the Bulgarian side of the border crossing.
The chief secretary of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior Georgi Kostov arrived at the border to coordinate the activities in the event of any change in the situation. The Greek authorities assured their Bulgarian colleagues that they would do everything possible to prevent blockade at the Bulgarian border.

The Greek farmers’ protest triggered an urgent meeting of the Bulgarian authorities at Kulata border crossing to discuss how to react in the event of a border blockade and identified safety measures for the drivers if they remain blocked at Kulata.
The Bulgarian authorities received assurances that the Greek police would take the necessary measures to prevent the Bulgarian border being blocked.
