August 18, marks 1,079 years since the dormition of St John of Rila the Wonderworker.
The saint is regarded as the patron of the Bulgarian people. The anniversary is celebrated most solemnly at the Rila Monastery, founded by the saint himself. Last night, Patriarch Daniil of Bulgaria arrived at the monastery, where he venerated the saint’s relics and a vigil was held. Today, the celebrations will continue with a Divine Liturgy, to be led by the Bulgarian Patriarch.
