Road conditions are gradually getting back to normal after snowfall covered most parts of Bulgariaon 3rd of January. Situation is complex in the North East of Bulgaria due to the snow. Many schools in the country were closed on 4th of January, towns and villages remained without electricity. The emergency teams are working to restore the power supply.

Schools in four municipalities – Aksakovo, Vetrino, Dolni Chiflik and Dalgopol – in the region of Varna have cancelled classes for 2 days. A total of 52 schools across Bulgaria closed due to bad weather, most of them located in the districts of Bourgas, Varna and Haskovo.

Lazar Lazaorv, Head of Management Board of Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency said that more snow is expected in the afternoon on 4th of January and urged all drivers to be cautious and have charged mobile phones with them. He has explained that the winter roads maintenance standards do not require cleaning of the roads to bare pavement. He said that to make winter roads passable, they should be treated, ploughed and sand should be spread.

The mountain passes Varbishki, Zlatishki and Troyanski were entirely closed for traffic, while Kotlenski, Tvardishki and Vratnik passes are closed for vehicles weighing over 10 tonnes.

Prevala pass was opened for traffic, but all vehicles are required to use tire chains and the cargo vehicles are required to travel without trailers or semi-trailers.

Vehilces over 12 tonnes of gross vehicle weight are prohibited to travel through Predela pass.

Chains are required on all vehicles travelling through Pechinsko and Rozhen pass, while cargo vehicles are not allowed trailers and semi-trailers.
