This year 30 students above the age of 16 will take part in the seventh edition of the archeological expedition “Krakra". The expedition is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the declaration, of Pernik as a city.
One of the biggest challenges for the students will be the excavations of the Early Christian Church in the Ancient Sanctuary ”St. Spas” around the Western Bulgarian city of Pernik
Due to its scale , “St. Spas” is a unique archeological complex, where 3 churches were built one after the other in the duration of 9 centuries. The first one is the only discovered church in Bulgaria, which was built in an identical architectural style to the church “Hagia Sofia” in Istanbul. The temple, which most likely collapsed after a big earthquake has an architecture, distinctive only to the Eastern Provinces of the Roman Empire
The students will also take on the role of guides.
Krakra is one of the biggest Bulgarian fortresses, that was for centuries very significant for the protection of Western Bulgarian lands. It carries the name of one of tsar Samuil’s most prominent feudal lords in the 11th century and was part of the 35 fortresses, all in his domain.
The archeological expedition will carry on until the 23rd of August It is one of the events , associated with the candidacy of Sofia and the South West Region for European Capital of Culture in 2019.
