Over 4500 people from across the country took part in the biggest Bulgarian wedding in the village of Arbanassi near Veliko Tarnovo on July 23.
Likely to be included in the Guinness Book of World Records, the wedding
was a unique homage to the traditional Bulgarian weddings. The
organization was spectacular as the newlyweds and all 4500 guests were
clothed in authentic folklore costumes and sat at a kilometre and a half
long white embroidered tablecloth stretching over the picturesque
meadows of the village.
The Bulgarian tradition calls for the wedding to begin with a “bidding” for and a “stealing” of the bride, a ritual where the groom must fill one of the bride’s shoes with cash, and then attempt to ‘steal’ her from her parents’ house. The newlyweds Georgi Georgiev from Lukovit and Iva Yancheva from Bourgas performed the wedding ceremony in a small temple in one of the monasteries in Arbanassi and then symbolically said their ‘Yeses’ in front of their thousands of guests on the meadow in the village.
The event was attended by a notary who certified the presence of the record number of wedding guests. Over two hundred folklore music groups from all over the country performed at the celebration. The newlyweds greeted their guests with authentic bean stew served in clay bowls on the white embroidered tablecloth spread across the field.
In an interview, the bride and groom explain that they have always dreamed to host a big traditional wedding and that this is a dream come true.
