reformist bloc petition proposed referendum changes voting rules

The Reformist bloc will establish an initiative committee to organize a petition in relation to the President’s proposal for a referendum on compulsory voting. This was stated by the newly elected spokes person of the Executive Council of the Reformist bloc, Radan Kanev.

The purpose of the petition will be to formulate the questions for the referendum and to answer whether it would be necessary to hold it. The reformists also announced that they would firmly support having real democracy in Bulgaria and therefore their priority would be introduction of electronic voting. Kanev pointed out that because it was obvious how much the ruling power did not want people to have their say on new voting rules through a referendum, the Reformist bloc would back the establishment of an initiative committee, consisting of distinguished citizens rather than politicians, to collect the signatures of the petition.

Radan Kanev said it was the Reformist bloc belief that politicians should not be the ones determining the rules under which they appled for their jobs and that the employer (the citizens) should design those rules. Kanev also stated it would be good to have a referendum and a non-party initiative committee, which would not include any professional politicians, presumably standing for the next elections.

The Reformist bloc is an alliance of five right wing parties currently not represented in Parliament: ‘Democrats for Strong Bulgaria’ (led by Radan Kanev), ‘Bulgaria of the Citizens’(led by Meglena Kuneva), the ‘Union of Democratic Forces’ (led by Bozhidar Lukarski), the ‘People's Party Freedom’ and Dignity (led by Kasim Dal), and the ‘Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union’ (led by Nikolai Nenchev).
