Bulgaria is ranked at the bottom among the EU member states in terms of tackling corruption, this year’s analysis by Transparency International shows.
The index, which ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and businesspeople, uses a scale of zero to 100, where zero is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean
Bulgaria is with an index of 44, Bulgaria, together with Hungary and Romania, is at the bottom in the European Union. Denmark, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and Luxemburg are ranked as least corrupt.
The COVID-19 crisis exacerbated democratic decline globally, the report says.
We are in a position that is not just the last, but indicates a systemic problem in tackling corruption. While most European countries are at an index level of about 66 points, Bulgaria’s level of 44 is below the world average and shows the existence of systemic problems in tackling corruption, explained Kalin Slavov of Transparency International.
