Two doctors in Bulgaria were sentenced for causing death to a mother giving birth and her baby in October 2013. The charges were pressed by the prosecutor’s office in the city of Gabrovo.
The former head of Obstetrics and Gynecology ward in “Doctor Venkova” hospital in the city of Gabrovo, Doctor Dimitar Angelov was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment. The obstetrician managing the delivery, d-r Sevdalina Koleva, received 3 years of suspended sentence with a probation period of 5 years.
The court found the two doctors guilty of negligent performance of their duties, which caused the death of newly born baby Alexander and the mother giving birth, Dessislava.
Doctor Angelov was denied the right to exercise medical profession for 5 years and doctor Koleva for 3 years.
The sentences of the court in Gabrovo are subject to appeal before the Court of Appeal in the city of Veliko Turnovo.
