violent storm rips roofs off two houses smolyan

Strong storm in the South Bulgarian city of Smolyan and the region in the morning on October 13 broke down a number of trees and scattered stones on the roads. In Smolyan, the wind blew away the roofs of two houses, there was a power outage.

Rositsa Kancheva's home was the most damaged. She and her husband had just left when the hurricane started. Neighbours informed them that the roof of the house was destroyed.

"When my husband and I came home, we saw that the roof was gone. And down in the garden there were fallen things. We were lucky not to have been there when the roof collapsed. It could have fallen on us in the car as we were leaving," she said.

Chief Commissioner Nikolay Nikolov told BNT that more than 50 signals had been received, mostly about fallen trees, flooded basements, the two roofs in Smolyan and a rock collapse.

"At the moment we have no signals of landslides that threaten settlements or critical infrastructure. We continue to closely monitor the situation, including the levels of larger rivers. At the moment, everything is normal and calm," he explained.

The storm from Smolyan passed through Zlatograd, Kardzhali and Haskovo. The situation in these areas is approximately the same as in Smolyan, without damaged roofs, mostly fallen trees, explained Commissioner Nikolov.
