Volen Siderov, the leader of ‘Ataka’ party, firmly rejected the allegations that he had hit a uniformed policeman. He presented his version about the incident at Varna Airport at a press conference on Sunday, 12 January. Siderov stated the Prosecutor’s Office had been misled and that he would cooperate with the investigation. He described the scandal as ‘smear campaign’ against him, devised by GERB party activists.

According to Siderov, the French diplomat Stephanie Dumortier provoked him as she said that “Bulgarians are common and do not deserve to be in the European Union.”

Siderov explained that he had not said a word before, because the MPs from ‘Ataka’ wanted to be in compliance with the law not to make any public statements during the course of the investigation. ‘Ataka’ leader did not specify whether he would voluntarily waive his parliamentary immunity or not, but promised the response to that question would become clear soon.

According to Volen Siderov’s version, it wasn’t him, but the French cultural attaché who started the scandal because she insulted him and the Bulgarian people as a whole, and at some point she swore at him personally. That was the reason Siderov asked her to show her identity documents and explained he had the right to do so.

Siderov denied having hit a policeman. Contrary to the Prosecutor General’s statement that the evidence was sufficient and admissible to support charges for physical assault on an official, Siderov explained it was he who was hit and punched in the diaphragm by the policeman Kostadin Kolev and that his arms were twisted.

In support of his words, the ‘Ataka’ leader presented a photograph of the policeman, showing that there was no injury on the policeman’s face and he said that the photograph had been taken shortly before he left the airport. Siderov added he would take court actions against the policeman for perjury.

He said he did not owe any apology to the French Embassy, just the opposite – they should apologise to him.

The incident at Varna airport took place on 6th of January when Volen Siderov got involved in a row with passengers on a flight from Sofia to Varna and later in a scuffle at the airport.
