water temperature along northern black sea coast dropped 10deg due upwelling phenomenon

A sharp drop in sea water temperature was reported by meteorologists from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH).

In the morning of July 24, the sea water temperature along the Bulgarian coast was between 23° and 26°, and by noon in the north, from Cape Kaliakra to Durankulak it dropped to 9-10°, in the area of Shkorpilovtsi to 17°.

A change to an increase is expected either with a change in wind direction or wind strength.

Upwelling is a process in which deep, cold water in the shelf zone near the coast from a depth of 300-500 m rises toward the surface due to prolonged shore-to-sea winds blowing, as well as in upwelling events occurring in prolonged southerly, south-westerly and south-easterly winds.

The temperature of the water close to the shore decreases, its salinity increases, as does dissolved oxygen and biogenic elements.
