The winter situation in Bulgaria after the heavy snowfalls during the weekend continues to be complicated on 18th of January.

Emergency teams managed to restore the normal traffic on the main road between Rousse and Razgrad, Northeastern Bulgaria but there are still snowdrifts of up top 2-3 metres, which are currently being cleared by rotary snow ploughs in order to keep the roads passable.

Many third-class roads in the regions of Dobrich and Shumen remained closed. The teams cannot start cleaning the snow because the strong winds cause low visibility, risks of failures of the snow ploughing equipment and difficulties for the drivers of this equipment during ploughing operations.

The road between Rousse via the mountain pass of the Republic to Kapitan Andreevo (Bulgaria’s border with Turkey) has been opened for traffic, including for heavy freight vehicles of up to 10 tonnes of weight. All vehicles are required to use tire chains.

Restrictions remain in place for traffic via Rishki mountain pass, which is banned for heavy freight lorries of over 10 tonnes. All vehicles are required to use tire chains.

The municipality of Samuil in Razgrad region and Dulovo in Silistra region, Northeastern Bulgaria, declared state of emergency because of power cuts in half of the villages in the municipality, problems to deliver food to some villages and difficulties with road travel.

In Northeast of Bulgaria, 11,000 households in 122 villages are still without electricity. In Western Bulgaria, the heavy snow resulted in a blackout affecting 14,000 people in 40 villages. The electricity supply has not been restored in 14 villages in Southeastern Bulgaria.

The emergency teams of the electricity distribution companies are working to restore electricity supply.

Unusual for the season torrential rains in the regions of Haskovo, Smolyan and Kardhzali in Southern Bulgaria caused floodings and triggered landslides. Many houses in the village of Orlitsa are damaged and on the brink to collapse.
