A young Bulgarian scientist at the University of Ruse, has developed a prototype device which helps people with impaired eyesight to recognize the colours of different objects. The system works though LEDs which reflect the colour of the object. The device transmits the information by generating sounds.
The scientist, Yavor Stefanov, is a PhD student in the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation, at University of Ruse, North Bulgaria. He says that the system will make the life of people with impaired vision much easier, because they will be able to use it to recognize colours.
He showed BNT team how the device recognized a red and a green apple by generating different sounds for the different colours.
Yavor says that the device will be attached to the hand, similar to bracelets, smart watches or smart gloves.
The system is part of a larger project, which will include sensors for heat, movement and distance. It will be possible to be installed on mobile phones.
The young scientist has used own funds to finance the project. Several days ago, he won the first prize in the contest “Light in Pictures, Images and Words” dedicated to the international year light.
