Tension in Sofia’s neighborhood “Orlandovtsi” is easing after two days of clashes between Bulgarian and Roma residents. The police presence in the area remains strong as new protest is expected in the evening on 15th of June.
The Bulgarian prosecution has already pressed charges against three men who allegedly were involved in the physical fight on Saturday night, 13th of June.
Since early in the morning on 15th of June, the police is carrying out an operation to identify and detain those who were involved in the clashes from the past two days.
Thirty four people have been detained, said BNT reporter Ivo Nikodimov. Most of the arrested live in the Roma neighbourhood, where Roma arriving from other Bulgarian towns setlle. The police is making enquiries to identify the ones without identity documents.
Local authorities are concerned that provocateurs may join this evening’s protest.
