“St. Mina” hospital in Bulgaria’s second largest city of Plovdiv is being transformed for the treatment of Covid-19 patients. The reason for this is the growing number of infected people in the region and the need for additional hospital beds. Remdesivir was in short supply for three hospitals with full wards.

The situation with the spread of the infection in the area is becoming more complicated. According to the data on November 6, 367 cases of coronavirus have been registered, 11 of them are medical professionals. This necessitated the establishment of the first COVID hospital in the country. Its transformation will take place in stages. One ward will be converted each week. The heart disease ward will be transformed first. It is expected that the Municipal Council will vote on additional funds for the medics who will work on the front line in the new wards.

As of November 6, 142 new beds for the treatment of COVID are being opened in three other medical institutions. Meanwhile, after doctors from three hospitals announced on BNT in the morning that there was a shortage of the drug Remdesivir, the RHI said that the delivery from Sofia had already arrived and the requested quantities were distributed.

The country's first specialized COVID hospital is expected to accept up to 120 moderate cases of coronavirus infection. The transformation will take place in stages to provide medical staff. The director, who himself is a volunteer on the front line, started talks with the employees.

Prof. Petar Petrov - Manager of "St. Mina" hospital: I want to know how many of my colleagues will stay at work in order to know with what human resources I will be provided and what assistance I will receive from the regional headquarters.

A total of 142 new beds for the treatment of coronavirus are being opened in Plovdiv, and after the transformation the places for the whole district will be nearly 900.

Dr. Maria Dimitrova - pulmonologist: The picture is alarming, the number of patients in need of hospitalization is increasing, and what is more alarming, the number of patients in serious condition is increasing and intensive care beds are also not enough.

Further 16 rooms for people with symptoms, but with an unconfirmed PCR test for coronavirus infection, will be allocated in “Plovdiv” Hospital.

Dani Kanazireva - Districtl Governor of Plovdiv: For me, the organization in the medical institutions is a priority, because when I see that there are no vacant beds, this is my biggest tension and concern.

The necessary Remdesivir medicine has already been delivered to “St. Mina” Hospital, the absence of which was first reported by BNT in Plovdiv. According to the Minister of Health, the medicine is available in the country in sufficient quantities.

Prof. Kostadin Angelov - Minister of Health: Additional quantities are delivered immediately where they are needed.

Dr. Siika Dimcheva - RHI-Plovdiv: Today RHI transported the provided "Remdesivir" from Sofia to Plovdiv, most likely it has already distributed it to the medical establishments.

There is also a shortage of anticoagulants, which are also part of the therapy of patients with COVID-19.
