Anton Zlatanov is the new chief of Sofia metropolitan police directorate, BNT has learned.
Anton Zlatanov is currently Deputy Director of the metropolitan police directorate responsible for security police and security of mass events. He replaced Georgi Hadzhiev, who was released from the post on May 19.
Regarding the release of Georgi Hadzhiev as the Head of Sofia metropolitan police directorate, the caretaker Minister said: I cannot accept that a chief who has watched calmly how police beat young people who were protesting in the centre of Sofia and under the columns of the Council of Ministers building (referring to the anti-government protests in the summer), remained indifferent. I will take the strictest measures, hoping that the style of work of these employees will change. The law provides for the duties and rights of police officers, nowhere in the law it is said that they can beat children on the streets or anywhere else. While I am a minister, I will be uncompromising towards such practices," Rashkov said.
According to BNT sources, Zlatanov was on leave in early September last year and was therefore not responsible for guarding the protests.
