The Bulgarian National Television will continue to broadcast the Olympic Games free of charge for viewers for the next 10 years. This comes after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced today, January 16, that all media rights in Europe for the four editions of the Olympic Games in the period 2026-2032 have been granted to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), of which BNT is a member, and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The public broadcaster participated in the tender organised by the IOC, after which the EBU members and Warner Bros. Discovery acquired the rights to broadcast, free of charge, the XXV Olympic Winter Games in Milan Cortina 2026, the Games of the XXXIV Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028, the XXVI Olympic Winter Games in 2030 and the Games of the XXXV Olympic Games in Brisbane in 2032 for 49 countries in Europe.
"It is a matter of prestige and public responsibility for the Bulgarian National Television to broadcast the Olympic Games. The efforts of the public service broadcaster to make the Games reach the viewers are great and I am glad that we will continue this tradition. Right from the beginning, in 1960, BNT sent a team to the Olympic Games in Rome, and 4 years later the live TV broadcasts started. We are proud to give the audience the opportunity to watch the successes of Bulgarian athletes live ", the Director General of BNT, Emil Koshlukov, welcomed the agreement.
The agreement continues the partnership between the EBU and Warner Bros. Discovery and guarantees free broadcasting of the Games to audiences in Europe.
"We are delighted to have reached a long-term agreement with two of the world's leading media companies. This demonstrates the continuing interest in the Olympic Games across Europe. As the IOC redistributes 90 percent of the revenue it generates, this long-term agreement also provides important financial stability for the sports movement and supports the athletes themselves," said IOC President Thomas Bach regarding the partnership.
"We are proud to have secured our viewers the opportunity to enjoy a free-of-charge broadcast of the Olympic Games until 2032. Through its members, the EBU has the potential to reach over 1 billion viewers across Europe through linear and non-linear platforms," said Delphine Ernotte-Cunci, EBU President and CEO of France Televisions.
The Bulgarian National Television will provide 125 hours of the Winter Olympics and 250 hours of the Summer Olympics to its viewers free of charge until 2032. This continues a long-standing tradition of the public service broadcaster airing the world's biggest sporting event, which dates back to 1964.
So far, Bulgarian viewers have had the opportunity to see, live on BNT, the winning of 53 Olympic gold medals by Bulgarian athletes, including the triumph of Stoyka Krasteva at the latest Games in Tokyo, Ivet Goranova and the Bulgarian national ensemble in rhythmic gymnastics.
