The Prime Ministers of Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Germany, Boyko Borissov, Zoran Zaev and Angela Merkel, welcomed the results achieved by the Berlin Process joint chairmanship of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia which aims to bring the countries of the Western Balkans closer to the EU.

In the presence of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, during the Berlin Process Summit, the leaders of the Western Balkan countries signed a Declaration on the Common Regional Market and a Declaration on the Green Agenda.

In connection with the Green Agenda and the single regional market, the Bulgarian Prime Minister stressed the importance of zero emissions and fair competition.

"The overall goal is for the 20 million people in the Balkans to benefit much more," Borissov said.

"What we have done so far and this event is proof that the region has accepted the Berlin Process as its own," said Zoran Zaev.

He added that progress and reforms remain a key goal for the region: "The Berlin process is focused on the results of co-operation. Initiatives in the region are paying off."

PM Boyko Borissov: We reaffirm our firm commitment to the development of the Western Balkans

Chancellor Angela Merkel noted that many positive changes have been made in the Balkans, which began with the Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2018. Then the government of Boyko Borissov put the topic of the European future of the Western Balkans back on the agenda.

Merkel welcomes the commitment of the countries in the region to the Green Agenda. The Berlin Process involves efforts to resolve misunderstandings, she stressed. She put an emphasis on education and called on governments to make efforts in the area of education, insisting on progress in science and innovation.

Angela Merkel invited those attending the conference to a meeting next year in Berlin to report on the progress of the Berlin Process. The Chancellor concluded her address with a call for mutual understanding in the region.
