Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers approved the Programme for Development Assistance and Humanitarian Aid

The Council of Ministers adopted the Medium-Term Programme for Development Assistance and Humanitarian Aid of the Republic of Bulgaria for the period 2020-2024, the government's press office announced on January 6.

Through the document, the country is involved in the efforts to meet the goals of sustainable development, set out in the UN Agenda until 2030 and adopted unanimously by the international community in 2015.

The medium-term program over the next four years envisages that Bulgarian development aid will be targeted primarily at the countries and regions of the Western Balkans, the Eastern Partnership, the Middle East and North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

As a new donor, Bulgaria recognizes the need for joint efforts in the fight against poverty and inequality. The funds and resources will be allocated for quality education and healthcare, as well as for security and economic growth. Activities to overcome the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic will also be supported.

Bulgaria will be able to support the affected countries and regions through grants or in kind. According to the mechanisms set out in the programme, experts and volunteers can also be sent on site.

Bulgarian humanitarian aid will be provided through the organization of rescue operations, provision of humanitarian aid in the form of movable property, grants, humanitarian aid projects.
