The outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borissov had a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The President of Turkey congratulated Prime Minister Borissov on winning the elections. Erdogan described the success of the Borissov-led political force as impressive, having achieved the highest result for the fifth consecutive time in parliamentary elections, while at the same time bearing heavy responsibility for tackling the pandemic in the country for a year.
The two discussed the situation with the pandemic in Bulgaria and Turkey and expressed hope that the danger of COVID-19 will soon pass and conditions for tourism and business will return to normal.
Borissov pointed out that in the past 2020, there has been a significant decline in the tourist flow between the two countries, due to the severe global health crisis. He expressed confidence that this is only a temporary negative effect of the pandemic, which can be overcome this year, including with the help of vaccination against COVID-19.
Borissov pointed out the traditionally good relations between Bulgaria and Turkey, which in recent years have been actively developing in the spirit of good neighbourliness and mutual respect. He emphasized the excellent cooperation in the field of migration and the zero pressure on our common border. Borissov recalled that a year ago he and President Erdogan met in Ankara, where they discussed tackling migratory pressure so that there would be security and stability in the region.
He also highlighted that Turkey is one of Bulgaria's leading economic partners. In the crisis year 2020, the trade between the two countries was almost 4 billion euros, and in the same year the flow of Turkish investments in the country amounted to 18.6 million euros. Borissov expressed confidence that with the end of the pandemic, economic activity would begin to rise again in support of the prosperity of the two countries.
Borissov congratulated Turkish President Erdogan on the holy month of Ramadan.
