Bulgaria’s Parliament on December 18 adopted at first reading the introduction of the position of a dedicated prosecutor to investigate any alleged crimes by the Prosecutor General. The decision was taken by 100 votes in favour, 46 against and 10 abstentions.
The amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code and the Judiciary Act, proposed by GERB and the United Patriots, envisage, at the suggestion of at least six members of the Supreme Judicial Council’s Prosecutors College, that the Plenum of the SJC elect a prosecutor by simple majority to investigate allegations of crimes by the Prosecutor General.

Candidates for the position should have at least 12 years of legal experience, a very good attestation assessment and no disciplinary sanctions in the past 5 years.
The ruling coalition motivated the proposal with the recommendations of the European and Venice Commission.
