On 3rd of July, Bulgaria’s Parliament voted to pass the amendments to the Law on Direct Citizen Participation in State and Local Government.
The Parliament lowered the number of signatures required for a petition for calling a referendum, from the current threshold of 500,000 to 400,000 valid signatures. The proposal made by the centre-left ABC party for reducing the threshold to 300,000 signatures was not accepted.
During the sharp debates, the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms requested all present MP’s to be checked against the list, name by name, and then left the plenary hall. The siting went on with Parliamentary control.
