Bulgaria’s PM Borissov to European Council President Charles Michel: Special attention should be paid to the EU's readiness to deal with pandemics

The coronavirus and the unprecedented measures to restrict its spread have put health care systems under extreme pressure, Special attention should be paid to the EU's readiness to deal with pandemics and to the response of the Member States, both during the current pandemic and to future health threats, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said in a videoconference with the European Council President Charles Michel on December 1.

The President of the European Council holds a series of talks with the Heads of State and Government of the Member States in preparation for the regular meeting of leaders on 10 and 11 December 2020. The aim is a preliminary exchange of views on the current agenda - COVID-19, climate change, security and the Union's external relations.

During the conversation, the Bulgarian Prime Minister pointed out that the need to ensure the supply of medicines, including vaccines within the Community and to strengthen the EU's role in global health was highlighted as particularly important for the fight against coronavirus.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov stressed that the access of all patients, as well as vulnerable groups, to adequate treatment should continue to be the focus of the ongoing actions and joint efforts of member states in enhanced cooperation in the Union and at international level.

Another focus of the videoconference was the achievement of EU climate neutrality by 2050.

The European Commission is expected to present an analysis of the economic, environmental and social consequences of the changes for the Member States

"It is also necessary to analyse the restrictions and needs specific for each EU country for achieving the new goals," said Boyko Borissov.

The PM told Michel that given the serious pandemic situation, the EU cannot afford further delay, and therefore the next Multiannual Financial Framework and the Recovery Package should be approved quickly.

“Every effort should be made to reach agreement as soon as possible in order not to jeopardise Europe's recovery and to enable people and businesses to access the EU's resources and programmes, which are so necessary to aid the economies, to continue cohesion, to increase competitiveness and employment “ PM Borissov said.
