Bulgaria has asked the European Commission to temporarily suspend imports of Ukrainian eggs. This was announced to journalists in Brussels by the caretaker Minister of Agriculture Georgi Tahov on September 23.
According to him, the huge amount of imported eggs from Ukraine and their prices have led to bankruptcies and tensions among Bulgarian poultry farmers. The minister said that Ukrainian eggs are sold at prices close to or even below those of Bulgarian producers.
The European Commission is yet to decide whether Bulgaria's request will be satisfied. The Agriculture Minister also said that the EC had proposed to grant Bulgaria nearly €11 million from the EU agricultural reserve to support farmers in Bulgaria who suffered from the drought in the summer.
